Thanks so much for the info Allie! I will have to talk to Joel and Brett and get back to you about the schedule. I assume that some of Casey's NY friends will want to meet you all and possibly even volunteer, depending on their schedules with classes, work, etc. I am thinking that I would like to add it as an "event" on the network site where people could RSVP, at the same time letting them know that the number of people that we can add is limited. Could you give me the rest of the details - the name and address of the facility where you will be volunteering, what you/we will be doing and perhaps the web address of the facility if people want to learn more about it? So happy that we were able to enable students to volunteer for the alternative spring break program through the scholarships! Yes, we loved reading the essays and were touched in so many ways by the applicants. That is why we ended up funding more. I hated to exclude anyone who applied.

Remind me at some point to give you more information on the pillow project!

We will be coming out for a CUPA meeting in and around Feb 6th. Maybe we can see you then. We will certainly stop by the volunteer office.

Hello Mr. and Mrs Feldman,

We were all really touched by the Memorial Scholarship applicants too and I'm glad you got a chance to read the essays.

The pillow project sounds absolutely incredible! If you have more information, that would be great- I'd love to see if Alternative Breaks and the VRC could do something similar.

I'm working on the details of our trip o New York City and I was wondering if you were still interested in working with us during the week. I know it is a little ways a way but here's our work schedule:

Monday March 22nd- 9am-4pm
Tuesday March 23rd- 9am-4pm
Wednesday March 24th- 9am-4pm
Thursday March 25th-9am-4pm
Friday March 26th- 9am-12pm

Monday and Friday we have room for two people and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, we have room for 5 people if some of Casey's roommates would want to join us. There's still plenty of time to decide but I wanted to give you the details ahead of time. We're all really looking forward to meeting up with you!

Happy New Year! See you soon!

-Allie

Reviewed the applications that were submitted to us as the finalists. They are really incredible. It is going to be very difficult to rank these as we are supposed to do. Each person has a strong desire to help others and several have had to overcome some serious obstacles in their own lives and it is amazing to see how focused they are on what they can do for others. We are so thankful to all the volunteers and your collective efforts to keep Casey's memory alive. As I have said beore it is especially gratifying to me when those who did not even know Casey are trying so hard in her memory. Your efforts to help others, while being in school full time, working and everything else are inspiring to me.

Speaking of volunteering--
Dianne came to the law firmand took part in our annual Pillow Project for breast cancer surgery patients this week. It had been an annual event and this year those who organized it wanted to do so in Casey's memory. Folowing breast cancer surgey woman are generally given some pretty drab looking surgical blue pillows. This project involves making pillows, using really great colored fabrics, then stuffing them, and finishing with pretty pink ribbons. We had a great time and made a heck of a mess in our conference room with all the stuffing . We completed over 200 pillows which will last through the early Spring. The pillows are distributed to the patients at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Some of the pictures have been added to the site and more and a fuller story are coming. Before the volunteers from our firm had even returned from the drop-off there was a touching e-mail waiting from one of the grateful recipients. From what we have learned this project is not widely done-it lends itself well to doing in stages-cutting and sewing of fabric, stuffing and then attaching ribbons-and there is a year round need. All we needed to do was provide the materials and the pizza and we had plenty of volunteers. One of our paralegals, Rita, is incredible with respect to all the volunteer work that she does. Reminds me a lot of all you Volunteer Resource people at CU! If you think after looking at the pictures it is a project that you would like to do let me know and Rita would be happy to provide all the details.

Thanks so much for the info Kylie! So happy that you have a number of applicants. We won't be around Dec. 5th, but we will let you know the next time that we are coming out. We would love to volunteer with you again. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Just read 14 essays for the Casey Feldman Memorial Scholarship! Can't wait for you guys to read them - there are some incredible people going on Alternative Break trips this spring!

Also, we're planning another craft day at Casa De La Esperenza Dec 5 as a final event with Meghan (AB Coordinator) who is leaving us for Egypt in the Spring. This time we're making Toothpick Snowflakes and Paper Cup Rudolphs! I'm not sure if you guys will be in town but you are of course invited to join us! If not, I'll send pictures! The ones from the last event are up on our facebook page!

I hope you're having a good break and you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hope to see you soon!

Busy time for us in Colorado-met with students and administrators from the PIIE program--the students had been past recipients of scholarships that allowed them to accept summer inernships with non-profits that otherwise would have been unpaid. What incredible spokespersons for the program and working for public interst organizations. We had a wonderful dinner with the Colorado students last night who coordinate the Alternative Spring Break program, Allie, Kylie, Devon, Sarah, Ausin, Brett, Di and I . This morning we attended the Parent's Association Board meeting and heard from student panelists on issues concerning safety on campus. That was followed by our outing this morning at Casa Esperanza, where we had a great time helping 4-6 year olds with arts and crafts, making paper cup turkeys and yarn dolls for themselves and extras to give to those who would really be cheered up by those gifts.. I also picked up a few words in Spanish from the kids who laughed at my terrible Spanish pronunciation.
I am so impressed with all of the Colorado students we have met-warm, caring, compassionate and always willing to help others. We had a blast this morning-the kids were so cute, eager to make the gifts and so well-behaved. Di and I are so appreciative of the invitation to come and help out-this morning was very special and we will remeber the looks on those kids faces for a very long time.
