“Casey, are you happy?” Mr. Feldman
asked his daughter, one day
in July 2009 at their shore house in Sea Isle, New Jersey.
Casey replied, “What do you mean, dad—today or in life?”
“Both.”
Casey paused for a few seconds,
thinking over the weight
of the question, and then smiled as she spoke,
“Yes… and yes.”
If someone were to ask you the same question today, how might
you answer? Casey's joy and pure love of life stemmed largely
from her relationships with her family and friends and her
commitment to affect lives of others around her positively. These
things assured her of happiness.
Casey made volunteer work and giving back to the community a
priority in her life. Despite a full course schedule during her
years at Fordham University in New York, a news editor role at the
campus newspaper The Observer, and various internship positions,
Casey consistently made time to volunteer and work to benefit
others. She devoted her time to the West End homeless shelter,
Momentum Soup Kitchen, and Animal Haven Shelter. Her compassion not
only for the less fortunate, but for all people, was always evident
in her daily interactions with family and friends.
For all this, it is no wonder that Casey has served as an inspiration to many, some of which you will find on the pages of this website. The following are reflections from some who have been inspired by Casey’s life:
“I can see many of Casey’s friends experiencing those sad tears
and I hope they will take
that passion and sadness and work toward what Casey would really
want.
I got that message and will not forget it, I hope they never do as
well.”
“I, as I am sure everyone else
does, carry the lessons that Casey taught.
She showed me that everyone has a story. You just have to listen to
those
who cross your path and they will be willing to share.”
“It struck me, as I listened to
the incredibly full list of her volunteering activities
and her amazing accomplishments, that she packed more into 21 years
of life
than most of the people in that room collectively have. Her death
is a loss for us all
and after hearing in such beautiful detail how she conducted her
life
one cannot help but try to pass on her loving example.”
“While I did not know Casey,
after I left the service, I knew I would be changed forever
by the example of this incredible young woman who touched the
lives
of so many...I can and will do better. I will not forget how she
lived.”
Through preserving Casey’s memory, we will continue to be
actively inspired by her life, and in turn, act as inspiration to
others. One good deed can ignite a chain reaction of positivity in
our immediate communities and in the world beyond our
reach.
The Casey Feldman Network provides an open, interactive
